Secondhand Showdown: Thrift Stores vs. Vintage Shops vs. Estate Sales
Did you happen to catch that vintage shop owners’ eye start twitching when they overheard your comment on the high prices of their “thrift shop”? This weeks’ On the Flipside with Notorious Vintage was inspired by an Instagram reel my business partner Siera created earlier this week addressing generalizations people often make when talking about thrifting.
While thrifting, vintage shopping, and estate sale shopping are all popular ways to find unique and affordable items, they each offer a different shopping experience as well as effort put into the curation of the merchandise. Whether you're looking for stylish clothes, rare collectibles, or unique home decor, it’s important to understand the differences between these types of shopping.
Thrift Store: The Hunt for Bargains
What It Is: Thrifting takes place at secondhand stores where the inventory has come from donations by individuals or organizations. The primary goal of thrift stores is to provide affordable goods to the public while promoting sustainability by reusing and recycling items that might otherwise be thrown away. Thrift stores are often, but not always, nonprofit organizations. Goodwill, Salvation Army, ReStore, and Mission 27 Resale fall under this category.
What You’ll Find:
A broad mix of items in all sizes and conditions
Common items include everyday clothing, shoes, household goods, toys, and some furniture.
Great for finding affordable basics or gently used goods.
Shopping Experience:
Thrift stores tend to have a more organized layout usually by category and size, but they can be busy and crowded depending on the location.
You can visit multiple times a week to find new donations, as thrift stores restock their shelves daily.
Prices are usually low, with occasional sales or discounts.
Best For:
Budget-conscious shoppers.
People looking for everyday items or quick, casual finds.
Those who don’t mind sorting through a variety of goods to discover hidden gems.
Vintage Shops: The Allure of Timeless Style
What It Is: Vintage shops specialize in items that are at least 20 years old. These stores focus on high-quality, unique items that reflect past trends, often offering curated collections of clothing, accessories, and home decor. Vintage shops typically have a more niche focus than thrift stores, often catering to specific time periods like MCM or 1960s chic. While the vintage shop owners may have originally thrifted a portion of their inventory, most shops are securing merchandise in bulk quantities from private buys, storage unit or wholesale buyouts, and a variety of other ways. Indy offers a wide range of curated vintage shops with different aesthetics appealing to all types of shoppers like Satellite Vintage, Zodiac Vintage, Nuova Vita Vintage, Market Vintage, Naptown Thrift, Vintage 54 Collective and so many more!
Vintage shopping fall under the umbrella of resale shopping which also include consignment shops and antique malls.
What You’ll Find:
Carefully curated collections of vintage clothing, furniture, and accessories that have been handpicked to reflect an aesthetic or genre.
Items tend to be in better condition than those in thrift stores because they’ve been selectively chosen by shop owners. Due to the age and condition of the items, if repairs need to be done, that is taken care of before making its way to the sales floor.
Vintage clothing is often high-quality and can include designer or unique one-of-a-kind pieces.
Shopping Experience:
Vintage stores are often boutique-style, with organized, neatly displayed merchandise and a focus on aesthetics.
The prices are higher than thrift stores because the items are curated for their rarity or quality.
The atmosphere tends to be more intimate and specialized, with knowledgeable staff offering expertise on the era or style of the items.
Best For:
Shoppers looking for unique, well-preserved items from specific time periods.
Those interested in finding high-quality vintage clothing or rare collectibles.
People willing to spend a little more for curated, one-of-a-kind pieces.
Estate Sales: A Personal Treasure Hunt
Owner Jess Pittman outside an estate sale
What It Is: Estate sales occur when someone is selling the contents of a home, typically due to moving, downsizing, or the passing of a loved one. These sales offer a personal glimpse into someone’s life, and often, the items for sale are from various stages of that person’s life—furniture, artwork, clothing, collectibles, and personal effects. Estate sales can be conducted by the family or a professional estate sale company like Flipside.
What You’ll Find:
A wide variety of items, from furniture and collectibles to artwork, vintage clothing, and kitchenware.
Estate sales often include rare or antique items that hold historical value or unique personal significance.
You may also find high-quality, designer, or antique pieces that are hard to come by elsewhere.
Shopping Experience:
Estate sales can feel like treasure hunts, with items typically displayed throughout the home. The experience is often unorganized, and prices may vary based on the seller’s knowledge or desire to clear out the property quickly.
Some estate sales are more like auctions, while others have fixed prices for items.
You may need to arrive early to score the best items, as estate sales can be highly competitive, especially if valuable items are up for grabs.
Best For:
Shoppers looking for rare, antique, or collectible items.
Those who enjoy the thrill of discovering hidden treasures.
People looking to furnish their homes with unique, vintage, or high-end pieces at a fraction of the price.
so, Which One Should You Choose?
Each shopping experience has its perks, and it all depends on what you’re looking for:
Thrifting is perfect for those on a budget or anyone looking for everyday items or casual finds.
Vintage Shops are ideal for shoppers seeking high-quality, curated vintage pieces that represent a particular time period or style.
Estate Sales offer a more personal, treasure-hunt experience where you might find rare, valuable, or antique items, often at surprisingly affordable prices.
If you’re anything like me, you want it ALL and do a combination of types of treasure hunting (errr every day of the week in fact). No matter which type of shopping you prefer, all three options offer the chance to find something unique while reducing waste and supporting sustainability. So, the next time you’re in the mood for adorning your body or home with something unique, cost effective, and good for the environment, think #secondhandfirst!
